Differences between American and British English lexicon in written and oral media: A preliminary overview.

En las últimas décadas el inglés se ha convertido en la lengua franca utilizada por hablantes de todo el mundo. Como consecuencia de su expansión, los nuevos hablantes han ido adaptando este idioma a su cultura, permitiendo así la evolución del inglés y de sus distintas variedades. Cada uno de estos dialectos tiene sus propias características lingüísticas que los diferencian del resto. Dos de las variedades más importantes y conocidas actualmente son la americana y la británica, con obvias diferencias entre ellas en los distintos niveles de análisis. Aunque se mencionarán muchas de ellas, este proyecto se centrará específicamente en algunas de las desemejanzas entre ambas desde un punto de vista léxico-semántico examinando el léxico usado en algunas notas de prensa sobre la misma noticia publicadas por diversos medios de comunicación tanto en los Estados Unidos como en el Reino Unido. Finalmente, se mencionarán las principales conclusiones obtenidas del análisis.
In recent decades, English has become the lingua franca used by speakers all over the world. As a result of its expansion, new speakers have been adapting the language to their culture, allowing English to evolve as well as the different varieties of this language. Each of these dialects has its own linguistic characteristics that differentiate it from the rest. Two of the most important and well-known varieties today are American and British, with obvious differences between them at the different levels of analysis. Although many of them will be mentioned, this project will specifically focus on some of the dissimilarities between these two varieties from a lexical-semantic point of view by examining the lexis used in some press reports on the same piece of news by various media in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Finally, the main conclusions drawn from this analysis will be mentioned.
