THE ROLE OF ACCENTS IN THE LISTENING MATERIAL OF ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS

Resumen
[ES]El inglés es considerado hoy en día como una lengua franca, ya que es la lengua utilizada por hablantes de
distintos países de todo el mundo para comunicarse entre ellos. Este hecho propicia el que el profesor de
inglés pueda mostrar preocupación por el acento o los acentos a los que el alumno se encuentra
habitualmente expuesto en clase y, asimismo, justifica la importancia de analizar las actividades de
comprensión oral que se incluyen en los libros de texto para poder valorar de este modo si una variedad
de acentos de inglés aparece representada en dichas actividades. Una vez presentadas las cuestiones
teóricas más relevantes relacionadas con este tema, el presente trabajo acomete en la práctica el análisis
de los materiales de audio incluidos en una muestra de libros de texto de inglés diseñados para el primer
curso de ESO y para segundo de Bachillerato, con objeto de explorar la presencia de diferentes acentos en
dichos materiales. La parte final del trabajo se centra en la presentación y discusión de los resultados de
este análisis.
[EN]Nowadays English is considered as a lingua franca. lt is the language most commonly used far communication among people from different countries ali over the world, and as a result, it seems natural that teachers show sorne concern about the English accent/s students are being exposed to in classrooms. This concern justifies the importance of analyzing the listening materials included in English textbooks in order to determine if a variety of English accents appears represented. After the theoretical discussion of the most important aspects related to this tapie, this dissertation has undertaken in practice the analysis of the listening tracks included in a sample of English textbooks designed for the first year of ESO and for the second year of Bachillerato, in order to determine the relative presence of different English accents in them. The final part of this dissertation is devoted to the presentation and further discussion of the results of this analysis.
