DE CAJAS DE AHORROS A BANCOS Y FUNDACIONES. LA TRANSFORMACIÓN DE UN SECTOR

Abstract

En 2007 se inició una importante crisis financiera en Estados Unidos que se extendería de forma rápida por el mundo. Además de los problemas externos, el sistema bancario español tuvo que hacer frente a sus propias dificultades derivadas de los desequilibrios y excesos acumulados en la etapa de expansión previa. Las reformas puestas en marcha para hacer frente a las consecuencias de la crisis, provocaron un profundo reajuste del sector bancario español, que afectó con especial intensidad a las cajas de ahorros. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el proceso de transformación que experimentaron estas entidades en el seno de la reestructuración del sistema financiero español llevada a cabo tras el estallido de la crisis de 2008. Unos cambios que han provocado la práctica desaparición de las cajas de ahorros españolas, con dos pequeñas excepciones, y que ha dado lugar a una nueva configuración el sector bancario en España.

In mid-2007, a major financial crisis began in the United States. It would spread very quickly throughout the world. In addition to external problems, the Spanish banking system had to face its own difficulties derived from the imbalances and excesses accumulated in the previous expansion stage. The reforms put in place to deal with the consequences of the crisis caused a deep readjustment of the Spanish banking sector, which affected the savings banks with particular intensity. The objective of this work is to analyze the transformation process that these entities underwent within the restructuring of the Spanish financial system carried out after the outbreak of the 2008 crisis. Some changes that have led to the virtual disappearance of the spanish saving banks, with two small exceptions, and that has given rise to a new configuration of the banking sector in Spain.
