This work attempts to analyze the importance of authentic materials in the teaching of foreign languages, specifically ESP. Their use afford to motivate and increase students' interest and promotes interaction and practice of different skills, allowing direct contact with the real language, in the way it is used outside the classroom. By working with authentic materials, students are to be exposed to an authentic speech, and also, they will discover different cultural aspects of the countries in which the language is being used. The idea of using authentic language material in teaching a foreign language is generally approved by the vast majority of language teachers, especially in teaching ESP, where it is hoped to be used for achieving a ‘real-life communicative purpose’ (Lee, 1995: 324). However, authentic materials must be constantly updated, as they are more and more frequently on demand in English classes. This work, besides, promote a review of the different opinions of experienced authors and their arguments for and against the use of authentic materials in the ESP classroom. In addition, types of authentic materials, sources, several authentic activities and evaluation.
