This project focuses on the study of the feminist and misogynistic features appearing in Jane Austen's Emma (1815), paying special attention to the role played by the eponymous character. A definition of patriarchy will be produced, as well as a vision of the ideal of fema le behavior in 19th c England. Containment, subversion and the hegemony of male characters over female ones will be examined in this narrative. Marriage will also be dealt with, so as to explore how it helps articulate the whole narrative. Finally, the narrative strategy used by the author in her work will be also examined.
