On the translation of taboo words in an English-Spanish corpus of film subtitles

Abstract

El principal objetivo del presente trabajo consiste en analizar las estrategias de traducción utilizadas para traducir palabras tabú del inglés al español en subtítulos de películas. Para ello se ha utilizado como herramienta de investigación un corpus computerizado multilingüe de subtítulos. De dicho corpus, OpenSubtitles, se han extraído y analizado las muestras correspondientes al inglés como lengua origen y al español como lengua meta. Tras una revisión teórica, el trabajo se centra en los aspectos metodológicos del estudio y los resultados obtenidos. Con respecto a estos últimos, aunque la estrategia de traducción más común para trasladar este tipo de palabras es la traducción literal, en un elevado número de casos se elimina la palabra tabú o se suaviza y substituye por una palabra con contenido semántico neutro. Tras haber estudiado todos los casos, se ha demostrado también que la categoría gramatical de la palabra tabú influye en su traducción.

The main objective of the present paper is to analyse the different translation strategies to translate taboo words from English to Spanish in film subtitles. With this purpose in mind, a computerized multilingual corpus of film subtitles, OpenSubtitles, has been used to extract empirical data of English as source language and Spanish as target language. After a theoretical review, the paper focuses on the methodological aspects of the study as well as the obtained results. With regard to the latter, even though the commonest translation strategy used to render these words is literal translation, in a high number of cases the taboo word has been omitted or softened and replaced by a neutral word. After analysing all the samples, it has been also determined that the grammatical category of the taboo word influences the way in which it is translated.
