How does language affect our world view?

Abstract

El propósito de esta tesis es el de revelar cómo el lenguaje afecta a nuestra visión del mundo, concretamente la lengua inglesa, así como el modo gracias al cual la relación entre lengua, pensamiento y cultura se vuelven evidentes entre los hablantes a pesar de las limitaciones del lenguaje. Primeramente, definiciones básicas referentes al campo de la lingüística cognitiva demuestran la existencia de corrientes actuales que abordan la influencia del lenguaje en nuestra visión del mundo. La tesis resalta clasificaciones fundamentales de la lingüística así como las propiedades del lenguaje humano para explicar su funcionamiento. En un plano central, diversas teorías, hipótesis e imágenes explican los modos a través de los cuales lenguaje, pensamiento y cultura definen la visión del mundo. Esta disertación argumenta que el lenguaje efectivamente afecta a la visión del mundo y espera ofrecer claves útiles al lector para comprender el funcionamiento de la comunicación humana.

The aim of this dissertation is to reveal how language affects our world view, specifically the English language, as well as the way thanks to which the relation between languages, thought and culture becomes evident among speakers in spite of the limitations of language. First, basic definitions referring to cognitive linguistics prove the existence of contemporary currents tackling the influence of language in our vision of the world. This dissertation highlights fundamental linguistic classifications as well as the properties of human language to explain its functioning. In a central stage, diverse theories, hypothesis and images explain ways through which language; thought and culture define the world view. This dissertation argues that language effectively affect the vision of the world and hopes to offer useful clues to the reader to understand the procedure of human communication.
