A Gothic Reawakening

Abstract

Esta unidad didáctica ha sido diseñada para 1º de Bachillerato, siguiendo una metodología activa y basada en trabajos que pretende promover la autonomía del aprendiz y el pensamiento crítico. El medio para conseguir este propósito es a través de Jane Eyre de Charlotte Brontë. Es una breve visión del género literario gótico, así como de los diferentes aspectos góticos que nos rodean a través de un personaje ficticio. El objetivo es concienciar al alumnado de la injusticia y la desigualdad en nuestra sociedad actual, mientras comparten sus ideas y crecen como personas. El inglés es visto como herramienta para acceder a información que de otra manera no podríamos disfrutar si no fuera por el aprendizaje de esta lengua extranjera. Así, a través del uso de las TIC, libros, juegos, hojas de trabajo, debates y trabajos creativos, los alumnos seguramente aprenderán el contenido esencial y reflexionarán sobre sus vidas.

This didactic unit has been designed for the 1 st year of Non-Compulsory Secondary Education, following an active and task-based methodology that aims at fostering the learners’ autonomy and critical thinking. The means to achieve this goal is through Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. It is a brief overview of the gothic literary genre which includes a number of different real-life gothic aspects that surround us through the eyes of a fictional character. The aim is to promote students’ awareness of injustice and unfairness in our current society, while sharing their ideas and growing as persons. The English language is seen as a tool to access information which we could otherwise not be able to enjoy if it were not for the learning of this foreign language. Thus, through the use of ICTs, books, games, worksheets, discussions and creative tasks, students will surely capture the essence of the contents and reflect on their own lives.
