Shakespeare desde la intermedialidad. Romeo y Julieta y su adaptación cinematográfica: West Side Story (1961)

Abstract

(ES) Este trabajo se enmarca en el terreno de la literatura comparada y la intermedialidad. El objetivo es comparar la obra Romeo y Julieta de Shakespeare con el musical West Side Story de 1961 dirigido por Robert Wise y Jerome Robbins. Para ello introduciremos la figura del autor del drama y hablaremos de la obra con el fin de contextualizar el trabajo, posteriormente analizaremos algunas de las adaptaciones más relevantes de la obra pertenecientes a las artes plásticas y escénicas. Como punto final, veremos la relación entre el drama y la película que son objeto de esta investigación. Veremos cómo son adaptados los temas y los personajes al cine y cómo a través de la música y la danza se consigue dar vida en la gran pantalla a los amantes de Verona

(EN) This dissertation deals with the field of comparative literature and intermediality. The aim of this study is to compare Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with the 1961 musical West Side Story directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. To do this, the figure of the author and the play will be introduced in order to contextualize the work. Then, some of the most relevant adaptations of the play belonging to the visual and performing arts will be analyzed. Finally, the relationship between the dramatic work and the film will be studied, which is the subject of this research. In this sense, it will be shown how the themes and characters are adapted to the cinema and how, through music and dance, the lovers of Verona are brought to life on the big screen.
